Look what Clayton Cowles did here with the lettering—the way the balloons overlap. It suggests West Wing dialogue pacing or that of a David Mamet stage play. It’s cool, it’s well-executed, but it’s not the thing that makes him a master of his craft. What is?

There. There’s a little gap — a pause before the YES. It’s small, but it’s there. It suggests Clint was thrown just the tiniest bit off by the question. Half-a-beat pause. Set-up… punch line.
Good letterers make things you HEAR into things you SEE in such a way that your brain unconsciously translates them back.
